Adrianne DeKlotz is the music teacher at East Side Elementary. She has been teaching for ten years, the past eight in Chandler. She also helps with the Circle the State with Song Choir, and accompanies the JH and HS choirs when needed.

Adrianne received her Bachelor’s degree at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho and her Master’s Degree at OU.  Both are in Music Education.

Q  What led you to teaching?
I got to work a lot with kids growing up in our local reading program and at church.  I also really loved music from the time I started piano lessons at 8.  In high school, I thought, “I love working with kids and I love music, why not be a music teacher?!”  It only made sense.

Q  Did you have any key mentors or people who influenced who you are, and/or your decision to become an educator?
A  My grandfather was someone who was always learning and teaching.  He knew tons about wildflowers and history and geology and woodworking and was always exploring things that interested him.  Then, he would turn around and teach my sister and me about it.  Everything was a teachable moment!  He inspired me to be curious and to never stop learning.

Q  What do you find most challenging about being a teacher?
A
As a teacher in the arts, it can be really difficult to show others the value in what you teach.  Teaching elementary music for example is so much more than “teaching songs”.  A great music teacher teaches students to be young musicians who can perform sensitively, read music, understand the components of music, create their own, and see how music connects to everything from history to art to language.  That’s the kind of teacher I strive to be, and it takes a lot of skill and training to do well!

Q  What's the best thing to happen since you started teaching?
A  One time, I was teaching a lesson and we were talking about a piece of art that went with the music.  One student piped up in amazement, “Miss DeKlotz, you know about EVERYTHING!”  It was the best compliment I ever got.

Q  What might students and parents be surprised to know about you?
A  I am a very adventurous eater.  I like food from all over the world and am not afraid to try anything at least once.  I’ve eaten squid, mealworms, ostrich, thistle, antelope, elk, octopus, sushi, and more!

Q  What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt?
A  Sometimes I think it would be really fun to own my own coffee shop!

Q
What are three things every teacher should own?
Post-it notes, a really reliable pen, and at least one puppet – a cool one.

Adrianne grew up in the state of Idaho in a little town called Filer which she says is about Chandler-size. She says she misses the mountains! Her parents and most of her family still live in Idaho. She has one sister and she is going to school in Sacramento, California.  She loves the outdoors!

Adrianne loves music a lot and is in a choir called Canterbury Voices in Oklahoma City.  There are 120 singers in it and they sing in the Oklahoma City Civic Center.  She even got to sing in Carnegie Hall with them once!  She says she was recently was in a musical with Lincoln County OnStage which was a hoot.  She also likes reading books about interesting stories in history and cooking ethnic food.
