Teacher Feature: Madison Deeds

Madison Deeds is the Agricultural Instructor and FFA Advisor for Chandler Public Schools. Originally from Garber, Oklahoma she attended Oklahoma State University and began her teaching career in January 2022.

Q What led you to teaching?
A When I first came to OSU I was an Applied Exercise Science major working to be an Athletic Trainer. Over my summers in college, I worked at the Oklahoma State 4-H office, traveling around the state teaching workshops to youth. After my first summer working there, it became very clear to me that I love teaching kids, and I love agriculture! I switched my major to Agricultural Education and now here we are today!

Q Did you have any key mentors or people who influenced who you are, and/or your decision to become an educator?
A I have a couple people who pushed me and made me the woman I am today! First, my mom, I would not be the woman I am today without her.  Second would be Cassie Graham, Ag-Ed instructor at Elgin Public Schools.

Q What would you say most motivates you to teach?
A Being an ag teacher, I have the opportunity to introduce kids to different activities and projects. Ag class has the stigma of “I have to have an animal if I’m in ag”. My goal is to get students who may not have an agricultural background introduced into the ag world and hopefully strike an interest or passion for agriculture.

Q What do you find most challenging about being a teacher?
A The most challenging thing for me right now is getting to know ALL my students. I have about 100 kids enrolled in ag classes which is great, but getting to know each and every one of them on a further level other than their name is something that I strive to do but is challenging when I have so many to myself.

Q What's the best thing to happen since you started teaching?
A I have not been teaching very long, but I think the best thing that has happened has been just getting to know different kids and their life experiences they come with.

Q What might students and parents be surprised to know about you?
A I’m sure if I have a super interesting fact about me. Lol the only thing I can think of is that I have been singing since I was little and have gotten the opportunity to sing at some pretty cool places!

Q What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt?
A If I could attempt another profession, it would be a Registered Nurse!

Q What are three things every teacher should own?
A Calendar, favorite pens, and sticky notes!

Madison is the oldest of four. She was raised by a single mother and says she has the best Nanny and Pops (grandparents). Madison and her boyfriend met in the State FFA Chorus. In her free time she likes to hang out with family and friends, and see how many more plants she can put on her front porch!
