alisha sams

Alisha Sams is a second grade teacher at East Side Elementary. Alisha has worked in the district for six years as an aide in PreK and second grade, and this is her first year teaching! She grew up in Moore and attended Community Christian School in Norman before attending Western Governors University.

Q  What led you to teaching?
A  I have always wanted to be a teacher! When I was little I would pretend to play school with my animals who were my students! My other goal in life since I was little was to be a mom. I have been so blessed to have three wonderful kids and also thankful to have been able to stay at home with them until they were all in school. After our youngest started school, I began working as an aide at East Side. Working as an aide in the school just confirmed my passion to be a teacher, so I went back to college to pursue my teaching degree.

Q  Did you have anyone who influenced your decision to become an educator?
A  I think all of the teachers at East Side were influencers and encouragers in my decision to become an educator. They are an inspiring group of educators that pour themselves into their students every day and have fun doing it! They are wonderful mentors and encouragers!

Q  What would you say most motivates you to teach?
A  The kids!! I look forward to seeing "my kids" every day, hearing about the game they played last night or the story they want to tell me about how they can't stand their siblings that day...lol. Developing relationships with my students and getting to be a part of their lives is the best feeling! I truly believe that relationship is the foundation on which academics is built on.

Q  What are you most excited or passionate about?
A  I am super passionate about the science of reading and how it applies to our daily instruction for our students. The brain is amazing and learning how it works in connection to reading is so interesting to me. It's something I feel like I am continually learning about and growing in my knowledge of.

Q  What do you find most challenging about being a teacher?
A  Fitting it all in is very challenging! There are so many things to accomplish on a daily basis that it usually feels like we could use a couple more hours added to the day. I'm sure the kids do not agree!!

Q  What's the best thing to happen since you started teaching?
A  The best thing I think is to see a student's eyes light up when something we have been learning "clicks"! It's a great feeling for both of us.

Q  What might students and parents be surprised to know about you?
A  I am extremely afraid of heights. That fire truck ride gets a little scarier every year!

Q  What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt?
A  Children's book author! That would be so fun!!

Q  What are three things every teacher should own?
A  Some small note or reminder on your desk or in your drawer of your "why", fun pens and a stash of chocolate!

Alisha is married to Mike and they have three kids, Zach (19), Lillian (14) and Addy (10). She enjoys family movie nights, walks with their dogs, and watching/playing basketball.
