Staff Spotlight: Sheila Slayton

"Working in a school setting has been a great experience. Watching the teachers and staff work with one common goal in mind -- helping kids get the most out of their education and grow into responsible adults has been very rewarding. "
Sheila Slayton

Our first Staff Spotlight is Sheila Slayton. Her office is in the High School building, but she serves all the schools, elementary through high school as the Activity Fund Clerk.

She and her husband Ron, both Chandler alumnus have three children and five grandchildren. All three of their children graduated from Chandler as well. Their daughter Vicki Ostrowski lives in Chandler with husband, Jon and their son Jacob.  Their son Jeff Slayton and wife Christy live in Choctaw with their sons Derek, Alex and daughter Savannah. Their youngest daughter Amy Clark and husband Bill live in Skiatook with their son Will.

Q. How long have you worked for Chandler Public Schools?
A. I started working for Chandler Schools in 1987 in the library at East Side.  I also helped in Karen Schooley's kindergarten class.  I then moved to the high school as secretary for Principal Ed Miller.  I worked with several different principals and counselors before taking the job of activity clerk.

Q. If you could do any job (anywhere) for just one day, what would you do?
A. I watch the house fixer upper shows on HGTV.  I would love to be able to take an old house and make it something beautiful.  I would need a lot of help though, so it is probably good that is just for one day. :)

Q. What three words would people use to describe you?
A. Because of my job (handling student money) I would hope the words to describe me would be honest, trustworthy, and dependable.

Q. Best vacation you've ever taken?
A. My husband and I went to Hawaii in 2008.  I would love to go back and visit all the Hawaiian islands.  Beautiful place.

Q. What are you favorite movies and books?
A. Movies: Tombstone, Lonesome Dove, Fried Green Tomatoes, Books: John Grisham books

Q. Tell us something that might surprise us about you:
A. I was a cowgirl when I was younger.  Riding horses,  barrel racing, pole pending and goat tying, baton racing.  Loved the competition!!

Sheila says faith and family are very important to her. She loves to have family all gathered in their home. She and her husband also enjoy taking all the grandkids on day trips to places in Oklahoma, which she describes as lots of fun plus educational. Still on Sheila's bucket list: Travel Europe.
