Teacher Feature: Lori Smithey

Lori SmtiheyLori Smithey is a 3rd grade teacher at Park Road Elementary. This is her third year in public school, but she has 20 years experience teaching private voice and piano lessons. Lori grew up in Chandler. After graduation she attended Oklahoma State University for two years, and then transferred to UCO where she received her degree in Musical Theater. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Q  What led you to teaching? 
A  A paycheck…..just kidding!  My desire to help others is what led me to teaching.

Q  Did you have any mentors who influenced who you are, or your decision to become an educator? 
A  Mrs. Telford,  Mrs. Milburn

Q  What would you say most motivates you to teach? 
A  My desire to let every student know that they are special, and that they are loved.

Q  What are you most excited or passionate about?  
A  Helping others reach their potential.

Q  What do you find most challenging about being a teacher? 
A  Discipline!

Q  What's the best thing to happen since you started teaching? 
A  The friendships I have made with my colleagues since becoming a teacher.

Q  What might students and parents be surprised to know about you? 
A  I was a professional opera singer for many years.

Q  What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt? 
A  Preaching

Q  What are three things every teacher should own? 
A  Coffee, chocolate, comfortable shoes.

Q  Will you tell us a little bit about your family?
A  I have a wonderful husband named Bret and three sweet kids; Jake 16, Eli 14, and Annabelle 9.  My kids are involved in many activities, so much of my time is spent driving them to their various practices and events.  We also have two Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix dogs, 6 chickens and a cat!  My favorite thing to do with my kids is to play outside with them and spray them with the water hose!
