"My love of music began very early in life."
Marilyn Meyers

Marking her 32nd year of teaching, Marilyn Meyers is the vocal music teacher for Chandler High School, Junior High and Park Road.  She was born and raised in Hominy, Oklahoma, moving her senior year to Pryor. Marilyn’s love of music began very early in life as she was always surrounded by good music since her parents were outstanding music teachers.  She previously taught 27 years in Beaver Public Schools, one year in Forgan School, and is now in her fourth year in Chandler.

Q  When did you decide you wanted to teach music?
A  I decided to become a music teacher after my sophomore year in college. In high school, I went to a six-week summer music camp for band (flute) which I loved, but there we also were in the choirs, too.  We had famous conductors from all over the USA and England. Weston Noble, our choir conductor one week, profoundly impacted me by his attention to detail and emotion in the music. In 2007, I was lucky enough to be able to tell him how much he had influenced me when he was a clinician for our Oklahoma Choral Directors Association summer convention.

Q  What is the biggest challenge you face as a music teacher?
A  My biggest challenge is working with students who don't particularly think they want to learn about music and somehow finding a way to give them an aesthetic experience.

Q  What do you enjoy most about teaching?
A  I enjoy having that musical aesthetic experience with my students, seeing their faces when it happens!

Q  Can you tell us about some memorable moments in your teaching career?
A  A favorite memory is taking my JH choir to OMEA convention to perform as an honor group and having my parents in the audience.  A memorable achievement was winning everything we could at the WorldStrides Festival in San Antonio with Music Makers, and being placed above much larger schools! I was so proud of them!

Marilyn describes herself as quiet, and a listener. She’s interested in learning, and working behind the scenes with the emphasis on her students. She and husband Brent have three grown daughters (and sons-in-law) and seven grandchildren.
